PEABODY ESSEX MUSEUM

Art | Culture | Inspire

The roots of the Peabody Essex Museum date to the 1799 founding of the East India Marine Society, an organization of Salem captains and supercargoes who had sailed beyond either the Cape of Good Hope or Cape Horn. The mission of the Peabody Essex Museum is to celebrate outstanding artistic and cultural creativity by collecting, stewarding and interpreting objects of art and culture in ways that increase knowledge, enrich the spirit, engage the mind and stimulate the senses.

All museum materials strive to create desire for
the viewer to participate in museum experiences –
with the goal of transforming people’s lives by
broadening their perspectives, attitudes and knowledge of themselves and the wider world.
